Design Indaba 2019 has just come to a close. The festival was once again held in Cape Town’s Artscape. Bringing the rest of Africa and the world closer to us to share design and innovation for the future. The 2019 conference was hosted by poet Lebo Mashile, Belgian playwright and director Lucas de Man and Kenyan musician and actor Patricia Kihoro.
Design Indaba Emerging Creatives 2019
The Emerging Creatives showcase at Design Indaba was set up as a platform to bring new graduates to the world of design. It’s a collaboration between the festival and the Department of Arts and Culture. The Emerging Creatives are selected in the categories of Architecture, space and interiors; Fashion & identity; Jewellery & accessories; Ceramics & product; and Graphic design, illustration & visual art
Highlights of the Emerging Creatives showcase included set designer and visual artist designer Natalie Paneng, interior designer Simpiwe Mlambo, molecular scientist-turned-leather goods designer Madri Scherman and Thabiso Joyisa, who’s set himself the task of building a new architecture school at DTU.
The Design Indaba 2019 Most Beautiful Object in South Africa
Interdependence II by Houtlander was named the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa at the Design Indaba 2019. This award has successfully done two things over the years for the festival, which is to involve the design and creative community and call on public participation. All 10 nominations come from other creative practitioners in the industry. You have fashion designers nominating songs, architects nominating fashion pieces and so on. After pieces, performances or performers are nominated, the process is then handed over to the public for voting.
This year’s winning object is a loveseat designed by Phillip Hollander and Stephen Wilson of Houtlander. The piece was nominated by creative entrepreneur Nandi Dlepu. Houtlander is made up of a design duo that makes wooden furniture.
“We create furniture that is tooled with remarkable accuracy without using a single nail or screw. We only use high quality sustainably harvested hardwoods.”
What the design duo behind Houtlander has created is a visually interesting piece of furniture that looks like it’s in motion.
