The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has launched a new way for motorists to renew their driver’s licence.
Drivers will be able to log on or email the department and request a booking slot via the Request a Slot campaign.
Officials hope the app will help address licence renewal backlogs.
“The campaign will run concurrently with the already successful Smart Mobility Weekends Campaign and vaccination programme at the taxi ranks,” said MEC Jacob Mamabolo.
He said previously, a notice on slot availability was sent to those cardholders whose licenses were soon to expire without them asking for it. Now the onus is on cardholders to take the initiative and make the request.
“Through this campaign, we seek to form partnerships with people, motorists and license cardholders to create platforms for them to request a slot. Applicants will be allocated slots within 30 days, upon receipt of the required, full information by the department,” Mamabolo said.
This information will be used primarily to prioritise those whose driving licence cards had expired during the Covid-19 lockdown period or earlier.
Requests for a slot can be made at the following email addresses:
– Email: [email protected]
– Email: [email protected]
– Alternatively, online bookings can be made on https://online.natis.gov.za
– An Android-based Application (APP) is currently under construction and will be available from Monday next week.

Honour appointments (slots)
The MEC also commended the 500 000 cardholders who earlier received notices and took up the available slots to have their license cards renewed.
MEC Mamabolo has also appealed to applicants to honour their appointments (slots) or at least communicate about not making it through on time. This will ensure slots are allocated to others.
Last week, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula extended the grace period for the renewal of expired licenses until 31 March next year. This is due to a massive backlog in the system.
This effectively means that all learner’s license, driver’s licence, temporary driving licences and professional driving permits that expired between March 2020 and August 2021 remain valid until the new date.
