President Cyril Ramaphosa placed conditions on the COVID TERS relief scheme, and grants will only be paid to those sectors which have not operated throughout lockdown.
The announcement came at the President’s 5th State of the Nation Address last night, 11th February.
Conditions of the extension and the sectors to be included will be announced after consultations with social partners at NEDLAC. The Social Development Minister will give more details on the grant in the next few days.
Businesses in several sectors are still struggling, and many families continue to suffer as the job market slowly recovers.
South Africa’s unemployment rate now stands at a staggering 30.8%.
The President said the social and economic relief package introduced in April last year is the most extensive intervention of its kind in the country’s history.

There are mixed feelings following the announcement of the extension of the special COVID-19 Grant of R350 and the COVID-19 TERS benefit.
