This morning on My Top 10 at 10, Uncle T chatted to rising star CocoSA about his music.
Real name Mvume Kosi, the PE-born music producer/DJ currently resides in Pretoria.
His inspiration
“It has to be Black Coffee; I never wanted to be him, I never wanted to make his music, but what he’s doing is a great thing,” he said when asked about his biggest inspiration.
How his stage name came about
Mvume struggled with his stage name before deciding on CocoSA, inspired by his surname, Kosi. “I wanted to play around that, and I went with CocoSA – that’s how it came about,” he adds.
Getting into music
A guy from his neighborhood back home helped him develop his musical talents. He was fascinated by how he synced songs on virtual DJ. The same guy taught him to deejay before he moved to CDJs.
Music is very personal to him
Uncle T asked CocoSA why he is so passionate about his music, and he said that the art form is quite personal to him.
“This music thing is way personal more than anyone else. If you want to sabotage it, we will fight.”
Releasing music
During the interview, Tbose was surprised that Coco SA’s music was not available on digital platforms.
“Before a lot of people knew me, I catered for my audience. For example, if you want to release on digital platforms, there is always a middleman.
“We made music during the lockdown and sold it. We made money, man.
“What happens is, there are these guys who make mixtapes; those are the target market because they always want to play exclusive music,” he explained to Uncle T.
However, because his audience has grown immensely, he considers making his music available to digital platforms.
