Mayor Mpho Phalatse announces that the City of Joburg will host a memorial service for Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.
The city will host Commemorative Events and a Memorial Service leading up to the day of Tutu’s funeral.
Key events will begin today and end with the Memorial service on Thursday, 30 December 2021.
The Commemorative Events are as follows:
- Beginning today, the public is invited to lay flowers and wreaths at St Mary’s Cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Johannesburg from 9 are held at the Cathedral from 6 pm -7 pm, from Wednesday 29 December to Thursday, 30 December.
- Father Dlwati will lead a Candle Light Prayer Service at the Tutu home in Orlando West on Wednesday 29 December.
- The Diocese of Johannesburg will hold a memorial service at the St Mary’s Cathedral on Thursday, 30 December. The service will include a Eucharist and tributes from the City of Johannesburg, local and national government, and the church.
The City of Joburg will work closely with the Anglican Dean of Johannesburg, Father Xalani Dlwati, and the Tutu family during this time.
The City will also provide municipal support services in Vilakazi Street precinct and St Mary’s Cathedral to ensure a seamless operation.
