Songstress Rethabile Khumalo has penned a deeply emotional letter to her late mother, Winnie Khumalo, on what would have been her 52nd birthday.
The Live My Life hitmaker passed away earlier this year following a short illness, leaving behind her two children, Rethabile and Thando.
Taking to Instagram, Rethabile shared a heartfelt tribute, remembering her mother and the immense impact she had on their lives.
As we approach what would have been your birthday, we find ourselves consumed by both memory and emotion. This letter is not just an expression of our love and longing, but a public celebration of the woman you were — an icon, mother, best friend, business manager, protector, and the soul of the family.
She described how life has felt different without her mother’s presence.
“Since your passing, we’ve had to navigate this world with a kind of strength that we inherited from you. It’s been a journey filled with challenges and triumphs — moments where we wanted to call you just to hear your advice and encouragement.”
Rethabile opened up about how difficult it has been to face each day without her, especially because her mother always had a way of making everything feel possible — even when the world felt heavy.
As your baby girl, I have stepped into my artistry — juggling the weight of grief, growth, and expectations from the industry. Professionally, I’m pushing harder than ever: writing, performing, and building on a legacy — not just for me, but in honour of you.
She also shared that she’s had to grow up fast, carrying her mother’s presence with her into every studio, performance, and space she walks into.
Despite the heartache, Rethabile vowed to continue carrying her mother’s light and evolving the story that her mother started.
We miss you, Ma. We love you deeply, and we will make you proud every day.
