Police have launched a manhunt for a group responsible for a cash-in-transit heist on Sunday, which claimed the life of an innocent bystander.
The heist occured in Eden Park, Alberton when a group of armed men opened fire on a cash-in-transit van.
A 38-year old man was caught in the crossfire and died on scene.
Medical emergency personnel assessed the bystander who had been shot in the head and pronounced him dead.
The group of suspects fled the scene on foot making off with 3 bags of cash.
Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe said a 72-hour action plan has been launched to track down those responsible for the robbery and murder.
South Africa’s cash-in-transit heist figures are increasing at an alarming rate. During the period October to December 2021, there were 60 heists recorded.
These statistics were released by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday.
It is reported that those carrying out heists are resorting to more violent means, using explosives and firearms to commit these crimes.
