Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has opened a case of crimen injuria and contempt against Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula.
The case was opened at the Brooklyn police station.
It follows Mbalula’s tweet on Sunday that Mkhwebane was a “hired gun”.
“Mkhwebana is a hired gun not the public protector,” Mbalula Tweeted on Sunday, 7 March.

Mkhwebane previously requested President Cyril Ramphosa to reprimand Mbalula.
Public protector spokesperson Oupa Segalwe reportedly said: “Mr Mbalula and other ministers who have made contemptuous remarks about the public protector were previously reported to the president. The request was for the president, in his capacity as head of the executive, to rein them in. It’s not clear if anything ever came of the request.”
Mkhwebane’s office said Mbalula’s conduct is unbecoming of a minister.
“His conduct goes against the constitution,” he told Kaya 959 news.
Sekgalwe says Mbalula is allowed to disagree with the Public Protector but it should be done in a tasteful manner.
One SA Movement leader Mmusi Maimane has also slammed Mbalula’s remarks.
“Don’t throw stones when you are the minister of acting. 100% service delivery online but in the real world, dololo,” Maimane responded to Mbalula’s tweet.
