The South African Music Awards (SAMAs) takes place this Saturday and it’s going to be a big one for new kid on the block Azana. Featuring on this week’s edition of The Ultimate Kaya 959 Top 30, the nominee speaks to DJ Keyez about her (not one, not two, not three) four nominations at this year’s awards.
At just 20, Azana whose real name is Makhosazana Masango debuted her first album, Ingoma last year, which saw her recognised as one of the freshest upcoming talents out of South Africa.
Her four nominations include:
– Best Afro Pop Album
– Newcomer of the year
– Record of the year (“Your Love”)
– Music Video of the year (“Your Love”)
‘I’m very grateful for the nominations. You know when you grow up and watch something on TV and you wish to be part of it one day and it actually happens, it makes me realise that my dreams are so valid,” the singer tells DJ Keyez.
Listen to the full interview here:
Azana started singing when she was just in Grade R at the age of 5 and went on to become the captain of the school choir in high school. Music has always been a central part of her life and through social media, Azana managed to connect with Sun-El Musician and his brother, DJ Sandile Sithole.
This birthed their explosive collaboration on Uhuru and the brothers helped Azana complete her album Ingoma.
The young singer is also a third-year law student but has ambitions of getting into acting too and with her powerful on-stage presence it’s not hard to imaging Azana breaking it into the film and TV industry.
