Back to back cold fronts have meant pressure on the power supply grid which is pushing the state-owned power utility Eskom to implement loadshedding.
With temperatures in some parts of the country barely reaching double digits on Thursday, Eskom issued a media release warning of impending blackouts to help ease the pressure, with a cold weekend predicted.
The cold weather coupled with the loss of generation capacity leaves Eskom in a precarious position in terms of supply. With the heavily constrained system expected to hit its peak with the evening’s high demands due to the cold spell, the power utility anticipates no other option but to implement loadshedding between 16h00 and 21h00.
Breakdowns currently total 12 984MW while planned maintenance is 2 924MW of capacity. Any further significant loss of capacity would force Eskom to implement loadshedding in order to protect the integrity of the system.
