Local clothing brand ZyleClothing who specialise in African Heritage blankets have just unveiled their new range of colourful cultural blankets. Headed by Phumzile Ntuli, a 40-year old textile designer from Vosloorus, Johannesburg, the brand has made great strides since launching in 2016.
The Afro-centric clothing brand saw a gap to create blankets for every tribe on the continent and seized the opportunity. New designs feature a rainbow hooded blanket that is a key feature in the season’s launch and forms part of their LGBTIQ+ inclusiveness.
Phumzile believes that her being raised by a cultural and prayerful single woman had a great influence on her creativity where some of the chores such as pictographs (ukusinda) with cow dung, picking of the wood from the forest (ukutheza), fetching water from the well and also seeing on how animal skins were used to make traditional clothes were the tools to mould her to be the person she is today.
The new range from ZyleClothing launched on Tuesday and includes buckled capes, bold traditional blankets for married women (Inkosazana blanket) as well as clutches and other accessories.
