There are perks to the masks we’re mandated to wear due to COVID-19 as the Kaya Drive team learned on Tuesday afternoon as the team took to air. Catching Sizwe and the team completely off-guard, Sandile van Heerden from the Kaya Sportsdesk revealed his new hairdo and sports a moustache straight out of the 80s.
Listen to the moment Sizwe saw Sandile’s ‘stache for the first time:
The team weighed in on whether ‘Sand-man’s’ moustache was a yay or nay and unfortunately, despite his Mrs. loving his new look, the team decided it was a unanimous nay!
With 61.4% of the votes by Kaya 959 listeners agreeing that Sandile’s moustache is a dated look.

One Twitter user took it a step further and likened Sandile’s 80s inspired look to The Weeknd’s throwback ‘stache which had equally strong reactions. Sandile’s new nickname, as a result, is now, “The Weekday.”

With a majority of the votes leaning towards the ‘stache needing to go, Sandile took to his social media to voice his disappointment.
Sandile unfortunately these are just 5 reasons why your ‘stache belongs in the 80s:
-
19th century masculinity
In the 19th century moustaches were an ultimate expression of masculinity, especially with men serving in the military. It was then adopted by civilian men as a mark of their dominance. There were various ‘stache styles including the handlebar, horseshoe and pencil ‘stache.
2. Unhygienic
The preference for facial hair decreased in the 20th century as there was a rise in beliefs that there were possible disease and infections living in a man’s beard. The moustache stereotypes were that the men were not clean and that ‘staches carried a host of germs and bacteria.
3. Comes across as untrustworthy
Sizwe’s initial reaction to Sandile’s ‘stache was that it made him look like an 80s pornstar and unfortunately the ‘stache does have a reputation that would be difficult to ignore. It was synonymous with many adult film stars at the time and could mean people don’t trust a man with a moustache easily.
4. You need professional grooming
Sandile admitted that he self-groomed his ‘stache and this is a huge no-no. If you want to keep the 80s inspired ‘stache you need to get a professional groomer to avoid uneven edges and to make sure the ‘stache is symmetrical.
5. Makes men look older than they are
Studies reveal that men who sport a moustache tend to look older than those who are clean-shaven, which is another point made by Sizwe and the team.
