More than 1 043 suspects were arrested in a number of police operations in Gauteng at the weekend.
Gauteng SAPS spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubele, said operations were conducted across all five districts in the province.
He said among those arrested are 21 drunk and driving suspects arrested in Daveyton, 20 were arrested for being in the country without proper documentation.
“Five suspects were arrested during the raid and closing of liquor outlets in Daveyton on Saturday during Operation O Kae Molao led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela and other law enforcement agencies,” he said.
He said in Sedibeng District and Ekurhuleni over 390 suspects were arrested during the weekend operation. Among the arrested suspects 12 were arrested for drunk and driving while a number of illegal liquor outlets were closed and liquor confiscated.
“During the early hours of Saturday morning, another team pounced on the shops in Johannesburg CBD where counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R2.5 million were seized and suspects. A total number of 200 suspects were arrested in Johannesburg District,” he said.

157 Suspects nabbed in West Rand
Meanwhile, over 157 suspects were nabbed in the West Rand Districts by integrated law enforcement agencies for various offences that include driving while under the influence of alcohol.
“In Tshwane District over 287 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, theft, robbery, rape and other serious and violent crimes during the multidisciplinary operation conducted over the weekend,” he said.
Seven firearms were recovered during the operations and these will be subjected to ballistic testing to establish possible linkage to other crimes.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear before the respective courts across Gauteng soon.
878 Arrested in Limpopo
In Limpopo, week-long operations netted 878 suspects, aged between 21 and 58 for various crimes.
“Suspects were arrested for crimes including murder, attempted murder, sexual assault, assault GBH, business robbery, arson, malicious damage to property, drug related crimes and other serious crimes,” SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, said.
He said in Bandelierkop outside Louis Trichardt, police arrested a 33-year-old taxi operator for allegedly shooting and killing a man and his son in an apparent road rage that reportedly commenced along the N1 road between Makhado and Polokwane.
The incident ended at a filling station where the suspect allegedly produced a firearm and shot both men. The deceased were identified as Mr Andrew Duvenhage aged 52 and his son Danie aged 29.
“In Roossenekal outside Groblersdal, members of the Limpopo Highway Patrol, Roossenekal detectives and crime prevention units assisted by Crime Intelligence arrested four suspects soon after they allegedly committed a business robbery at a liquor outlet.
“Four firearms, including two self-made shotguns and 26 ammunition were recovered during the arrests. The suspects aged between 23 and 28 will appear in Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court,” he said.

Among those arrested, were two men for the murder of a man in Mphanama Cross. The pair allegedly hit the man with bricks, fatally wounding him, in a fight while they were gambling.
“️A 35-year-old woman was arrested at Leeuwfontein under Motetema policing area outside Groblersdal after she was found in possession of 159 sachets of Nyaope, 25 sachets of Crystal meth and 0,5 grams of dagga,” Mojapelo said.
During the course of the operations, the police also attended to 253 incidents of domestic violence and served a total of 223 protection orders.
