Micah Reddy, an investigative journalist and dual South African-British national, has gone missing in Djibouti alongside his local fixer, Kooki Mahmoud.
Reddy, the African coordinator for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, travelled to the country on assignment last Thursday and maintained regular hourly contact with colleagues until communication abruptly ceased at 1:00 pm local time on Saturday.
His wife, Nicole Beardsworth, stated that his phone was switched off after four hours of silence, leaving his family deeply concerned.
His mother noted that his final messages mentioned the intense local weather without expressing any fear, leading relatives to hope he may be held for questioning by local authorities.
Alerts regarding the disappearance have been lodged with Interpol, the British High Commission, and South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation.
Meanwhile, the Committee to Protect Journalists has urged Djiboutian authorities to immediately clarify the men’s whereabouts and safety, though local government officials have denied knowledge of the incident.
