- The death toll from a multi-vehicle crash on the N1 in the Western Cape has risen to 21.
- The collision, involving two minibus taxis and a seven-seater vehicle, also left three people seriously injured.
- Motorists have been urged to avoid the N1 between Laingsburg and Beaufort West and use alternative routes where possible.
At least 21 people have been killed in a devastating multi-vehicle collision in the Western Cape.
The crash reportedly happened at around 11:30 pm on Sunday, 13 September, on the N1 between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka.
Initial reports put the death toll at 18, but authorities have since confirmed that the number has risen to 21, while three others sustained serious injuries.
The collision involved two minibus taxis and a seven-seater vehicle.
The cause of the accident has not yet been established and remains under investigation.
Western Cape MEC for Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger said the focus is also on those who have been injured and the teams caring for them.
“We are devastated by the loss of multiple lives following this serious collision on the N1. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones who have lost someone in this tragedy. No words can ease the pain of such a sudden and devastating loss, and we hold them in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
Motorists have been advised to avoid the N1 between Laingsburg and Beaufort West and use alternative routes where possible.
