- Seven senior Crime Intelligence officials have had all fraud and corruption charges against them permanently stayed.
- The National Prosecuting Authority made the decision after accepting formal representations from the defense in court on Friday.
- Brigadier Dineo Mokwele welcomed the withdrawal, describing it as an opportunity to rebuild her life following months of uncertainty.
All fraud and corruption charges against seven senior South African Crime Intelligence officials, including divisional head Dumisani Khumalo, have been dropped.
The former accused appeared briefly before the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Friday, where prosecutors formally confirmed the end of the legal proceedings.
The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), which initially spearheaded the prosecution, informed the court that the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) had formally accepted representations to permanently stay the case.
The charges had stemmed from the controversial appointment of Brigadier Dineo Mokwele to the Crime Intelligence division.
Speaking after the court proceedings, Mokwele expressed immense relief over the outcome and reflected on the personal toll of the legal battle.
“A heavy burden has been lifted off me, but also for my family,” she said.
“They had to carry this with me. I can rebuild my life. The name Dineo Mokwele will never shine the same way, but at least, out of this, something good is coming. I appreciate that this case has created a platform for us to look at the overhauling of the criminal justice system.”
Meanwhile, Crime Intelligence Head Dumisani Khumalo says he is looking forward to returning to work and continuing to serve the people of South Africa.
