Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is finally expected to face questions that have followed his name throughout the Madlanga Commission on Monday, 17 August 2026.
The Commission’s spokesperson confirmed on Sunday evening that Matlala will give his testimony before the inquiry, which is investigating allegations of corruption and interference within the criminal justice system, for two days.
“Matlala first appeared before the Commission on 15 July 2026 but, in terms of a ruling handed down by Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, his testimony was postponed to 1 September 2026.
Mr Matlala’s testimony has been brought forward to 17 and 18 August, and he will now appear before the Commission under subpoena at 09h30 tomorrow (Monday),” said Michaels.
The previous testimonies at the Commission have placed Matlala at the centre of allegations of corruption, organised crime and undue influence within law enforcement.
Today and on Tuesday, the alleged underworld kingpin will have an opportunity to respond to claims that he cultivated relationships with senior police officials, received confidential information and used those connections to advance his business interests.
Matlala faces a long list of allegations that he will have to answer before the Madlanga Commission.
He is accused of giving gifts and financial benefits to several senior police officials, allegedly in an effort to buy influence and secure lucrative South African Police Service (SAPS) contracts.
Matlala is also expected to face questions about his relationship with suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi, including the controversial agreements that allegedly allowed Matlala’s vehicles to use blue lights.
And then there is Matlala’s relationship with North West businessman Suleiman Carrim, including money Carrim says he provided to Matlala.
