- Police say they do not suspect foul play in the deaths of two St Stithians College pupils whose bodies were found at a lodge in Sabie.
- The school has paid tribute to Ethan Coetzee and Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, describing them as talented and well-loved pupils.
- An investigation into the cause of their deaths is underway.
There’s no foul play suspected in the mysterious deaths of two teenagers from St Stithians College in Johannesburg.
The bodies of 19-year-old Ethan Coetzee and Grade 11 pupil Cameron Waldeck-Cooks were discovered at a lodge in Sabie, Mpumalanga, on Monday, 03 August 2026.
Coetzee, who matriculated last year, was a member of the school’s first rugby team, while Waldeck-Cooks was a talented rower and netball player.
“A dedicated and passionate rower, she earned the respect of her peers and coaches through her commitment, perseverance and love for the sport. She was a natural leader and a mentor to many younger girls in the rowing programme, often taking on the role of a supportive ‘big sister’ who encouraged and inspired those around her,” said St Stithians in a statement.
The school said the Grade 11 pupil will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, and determination, while Ethan will be remembered for his strength, commitment, and humility.
St Stithians extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends and school community.
“We hold them closely in our prayers and stand alongside them, and one another, as we mourn the loss of Ethan and Cameron.”
Mpumalanga police have confirmed that they do not suspect any foul play. However, an investigation into the cause of the teenagers’ deaths has been launched.
