South African swimming legend Chad le Clos has revealed that his Cape Town apartment was completely destroyed in a fatal fire just hours after he made history as the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history.

The blaze tore through his Sea Point apartment block on the evening of 30 July, claiming the life of a 93-year-old neighbour, identified as Sam Strine.

The tragedy unfolded whilst the 34-year-old was competing at the 2026 Games in Glasgow, where he clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 4x100m medley relay to take his career tally to 21 Commonwealth medals, surpassing Australia’s Emma McKeon.

The historic achievement capped off a successful campaign that also yielded silver in the mixed 4x100m medley and bronze in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

Breaking his silence on social media, the 2012 Olympic gold medallist who famously beat Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly expressed deep shock over the loss of his home of more than 10 years and paid tribute to his deceased neighbour:

“On the evening of 30 July, amid breaking the all-time Commonwealth record, a fire started in my apartment block, which quickly spread to my home. Sadly my home, where I’ve lived for more than a decade, burnt down and there is nothing left to salvage.”

Le Clos noted that over 90% of his personal belongings and irreplaceable swimming memorabilia were lost in the blaze.

Rather than focusing solely on his own loss, the Durban-born champion has rallied around his tight-knit community, launching a relief campaign through the Chad le Clos Foundation to ensure 100% of proceeds go directly toward helping displaced neighbours rebuild.
