- A Durban man has died after he was allegedly run over by a water tanker driver during a dispute over water supply.
- The incident, which was captured on video and circulated on social media, has sparked calls from the family of the deceased for justice and accountability.
- Police are investigating the matter, while the eThekwini Municipality has opened an internal inquiry.
A tragic incident has hit rural KwaZulu-Natal after a water tanker driver ran over a man in the south-west of Durban on Sunday, 02 August 2026.
The incident was allegedly prompted by an altercation between community members and the tanker driver over water issues in the area.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, the deceased is seen being struck by the tanker truck, which throws him to the ground, right in front of the vehicle. The truck then runs over him as the driver was allegedly trying to flee.
The man who was hit by the truck has been identified as Celani Zungu. He died at a healthcare facility shortly after he was admitted following the incident.

Initial reports suggest that the water tanker driver, whose responsibility is to supply the community with water, allegedly does not provide the service but instead makes people pay to have their JoJo tanks filled.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased is calling for accountability and justice in the matter.
Celani Zungu’s brother, who witnessed the incident and rushed him to hospital, says his family wants answers and justice.
KZN police are investigating the matter, while the eThekwini Municipality has opened an internal inquiry into the incident.
