The upcoming launch of Kaya Breakfast on Wednesday,1 July 2026, is sparking conversations beyond the airwaves.
Renowned South African publication Mail & Guardian has published an in-depth feature that explores what DJ Fresh’s arrival at Kaya 959 means for the station, its audience, and the future of South African breakfast radio.
The article highlights Kaya’s founding vision by looking back at its launch in 1997, when the founding lineup included late cultural icons, trumpeter Hugh Masekela and singer Sibongile Khumalo.
It looks at how the new breakfast show is set to build on that very same legacy and why breakfast radio is still one of the most influential spaces in South African media today.
The feature also explores DJ Fresh’s return to breakfast radio alongside co-host Thato Mataboge, award-winning financial journalist Gugulethu Mfuphi and the wider Kaya Breakfast team.

“Kaya Breakfast will set the tone for conversations around business, culture, society and daily life. The show will combine the immediacy of live radio with a strong visual and digital presence, creating content that resonates both on-air and online.
“Its sound will reflect the rhythm of a modern African city: energetic, informed, globally connected and confidently rooted in local culture,” the article reads.
