This Youth Day, 16 June 2026, South Africa is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising.
While the challenges facing today’s youth may be different, Youth Day serves as a reminder of the courage and determination of the young people who helped shape the country’s future.
Watching these South African films is a powerful way to reflect on the country’s journey, as they explore themes of resilience, perseverance and hope that remain as relevant as ever.
More importantly, they highlight the role young people can still continue to play in shaping South Africa’s future.
From the iconic Sarafina! to the inspiring true story of Springboks captain Siya Kolisi, here are five movies worth streaming this Youth Day.
Sarafina!
Year: 1992
Director: Darrell Roodt
Starring: Whoopi Goldberg, Leleti Khumalo, Miriam Makeba
Set in Soweto, Sarafina is about a young black student who grows increasingly opposed to the injustices of the racist South African government, especially when her fellow students protest against Afrikaans being made the official language in her school and when her favourite teacher is arrested.
Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu

After being a victim of police brutality during the 1976 Soweto uprisings, a 19-year-old Solomon Mahlangu goes into exile before joining the liberation movement and becoming an icon of South Africa’s liberation.

Set in Johannesburg, the Oscar-winning drama follows a young gang leader whose life changes after he discovers a baby in a car he has stolen. The experience forces him to confront his past and reconsider the path he has chosen.

The film tells the story of a 12-year-old girl who must navigate community stigma and family hardship after her baby sister dies and rumours begin to circulate about her mother’s health.
Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story

Starring: Siya Kolisi, Rachel Kolisi, family members and teammates
This inspirational documentary follows Siya Kolisi’s journey from growing up in Zwide in the Eastern Cape to becoming the first Black captain of the Springboks and leading South Africa to Rugby World Cup glory. It explores perseverance, leadership and overcoming adversity.
