Seventy families in Gauteng now have safe shelter and a roof over their heads following the handover of houses in Mogale City by the provincial government.
The handover was led by Premier Panyaza Lesufi and the Department of Human Settlements MEC Tasneem Motara on Wednesday, 03 March 2026, at Dr Sefularo Village in Mogale City.
The provincial government says the project forms part of its ongoing commitment to restoring dignity, expanding access to housing, and building sustainable communities.
Speaking during the housing handover programme, Premier Lesufi said the project reflects the transition from planning to implementation.
“This is something that pleases me. You know, to move from planning, budget allocation, then implementation. Sometimes we spend so much time in boardrooms planning about these developments and sometimes we don’t even believe that finally something like this would happen,” he said.
He added that the initiative is a lifetime opportunity aimed at restoring dignity, particularly for people who have been on housing waiting lists for many years, as well as those who have been evicted from farms or lost hope of ever receiving homes.
“This is heartwarming. It is something that pushes the majority of us to do more. I would like to congratulate this community for their patience and resilience, considering that this project was resisted,” Lesufi said.
He further stated that this is how Gauteng operates.
“We ignore the noise and focus on the task,” he said.
While the project has been welcomed by beneficiary families, it has also drawn criticism from some South Africans who argue that such housing handovers often increase during election periods, suggesting possible political motivation ahead of upcoming local elections.
This morning, the @GautengProvince will hand over 70 new homes to deserving beneficiaries at Dr Sefularo Village in Mogale City.
