Health experts say they will keep a close eye on the COVID-19 infection numbers as the country moves into the winter months.
According to the latest statistics, over 1,500 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hour cycle.
At the same time 71 new COVID-19 related deaths were recorded bringing the total number of deaths to over 54,800.
The latest figures come as nursing unions raise concern that their members are still under immense pressure.
This comes as 12 May marks International Nurses Day.
President of the Nurses Indaba Union Lerato Mthunzi says the pandemic has highlighted challenges faced by nurses daily.
“During the pandemic, the nursing profession was once more again had to be in the spotlight and I think this brings to us a very difficult conversation of saying how do we help them?,” she says.
In 2020, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier Sihle Zikalala stated that nurses account for the majority of deaths due to COVID-19.
