- Hangwani Maumela has regained several luxury vehicles after a court ordered the SIU to return them.
- The cars were seized during investigations into the multi-billion-rand Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal.
- Despite the ruling, the SIU says its case remains unaffected, with security ordered pending further legal proceedings.
Alleged corruption kingpin Hangwani Maumela has received his luxury vehicles back following a court ruling ordering the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to return them.
Maumela was flagged as a leader of one of the syndicates implicated in the more than R2-billion Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal, first exposed by murdered whistleblower Babita Deokaran.
His vehicles were seized in October 2025 during a coordinated raid linked to the Tembisa Hospital corruption probe. The cars were confiscated as part of an investigation into alleged looting and corruption involving Maumela.
Three Lamborghinis were seized during a raid at his lavish Sandton home. Maumela is accused of siphoning more than R800 million through tenders at Tembisa Hospital.

The SIU says the ruling ordering the return of the supercars does not hinder its case in any way.
The unit was ordered to return three Aston Martins, one Rolls-Royce and two Ferraris seized from the Omar dealership in Witbank, which investigators believe is linked to Maumela.
However, the ruling is not an outright win for Maumela and his alleged syndicate, as the tribunal has ordered the Omar dealership to provide security equal to the value of each vehicle.
This is pending the outcome of a court case in which the SIU is challenging the lawfulness of a Tembisa Hospital tender awarded to Maumela.
