- 20 000 students remain under investigation for receiving irregular NSFAS funding.
- R1.7 billion has been recovered via enforcement action, with zero voluntary disclosures.
- 60-month repayment plans are available, though criminal referrals have been sent to the NPA.
South Africa’s Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has successfully recovered R1.7 billion in mismanaged student funding, even as 20 000 students remain under active investigation for irregular claims.
The probe into the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) covers a five-year period between 2016 and 2021.
Investigators found that vast sums were improperly claimed by unqualified applicants or lost through systemic mismanagement. Despite the scale of the recovery, officials noted a striking lack of public cooperation.
SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago spoke to Drive 959 and confirmed that every cent clawed back resulted from enforcement rather than honesty.
“We have not had any person come to us voluntarily,” Kganyago stated, noting that all active cases were identified through internal forensic processes.
