Winning the Lotto jackpot is everyone’s dream, even for those who don’t play the Lotto. Do you ever wonder what would happen if you don’t claim your money after hitting the jackpot?
Most people play Lotto with the hope of winning or for the fun of it, and just out of nowhere, they become fortunate and actually win millions.
However, because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, players barely check whether they won or not.
As reported last week, Ithuba was searching for an FNB participant who won the R178 million PowerBall jackpot on Tuesday night. At the time of publishing, the holder of the ticket had not come forward to collect his or her money.
Well, it’s simple: unclaimed winnings are transferred to the National Lotteries Participants Trust Fund (NLPTF) for safekeeping until claimed by the respective winner.
If the prizes are not claimed within 365 days from the draw date, the claim period will expire, and the funds are redirected to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) to be shared among good causes and beneficiary organisations.
Ithuba encourages Lotto and PowerBall players to check their tickets regularly to ensure they don’t miss out on their chances of becoming millionaires.
But if you miss your 365-day window period, you’ll be comforted by the fact that your money will be put to good use.
