MultiChoice has reversed its 2020 decision to remove several of Leon Schuster’s older films from its streaming platforms, DStv and Showmax.
The titles, which include Sweet ‘n Short, Oh Schucks, It’s Schuster, and Mr Bones, were initially banned during the Black Lives Matter movement.
The controversy stemmed from Schuster’s use of makeup and disguises to portray characters of different races, a practice often associated with blackface that was deemed racially insensitive.
At the time, Showmax stated the films were “products of their time” but had to balance this against its role as a unifying platform.
Now, without elaborating on the reason for the policy change, the company has made the previously banned comedies available for streaming once again.
