Her death comes four days after she marked her 75th birthday

South Africa is mourning the loss of legendary actress Mam’ Nandi Nyembe, who passed away at the age of 75, just four days after celebrating her birthday.
Her family, together with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, confirmed her passing in a joint statement, describing her as “the very soul of South African storytelling.”
“Mam’ Nandi was more than an actress; she was a teacher, a guide, and a mother to this nation. Through her life and work, she carried our struggles, laughter, and victories with dignity and heart, giving our people pride and our stories a purpose,” the statement read.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie praised Nyembe as a resilient woman who broke barriers and inspired countless young actors, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds to dream beyond their circumstances.
She was widely celebrated for her iconic roles in productions such as Zone 14, Yizo Yizo, and Isibaya, leaving behind an indelible mark on South African television.
While the details of her passing have not been disclosed, it was known that her health had been deteriorating
Her family expressed their grief and gratitude for the love shown during this difficult time.
“Our hearts are broken as we share the loss of our beloved mother and grandmother, Nandi Nyembe. To the world, she was a gifted actress; to us, she was our everything. Her love, laughter, and strength will stay with us always,” said her grandson, Jabulani Nyembe.
