- The Democratic Alliance has chosen Cilliers Brink as its mayoral candidate for Tshwane for the 2026 local elections.
- DA leader John Steenhuisen criticised the current ANC-led administration for the city’s financial deficit.
- Brink said his campaign would focus on engaging with residents and businesses to inform the party’s formal pledges.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced Cilliers Brink as its candidate for the Tshwane mayoral post ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
The party’s leader, John Steenhuisen, used the announcement to criticise the African National Congress (ANC) and its coalition partners for the city’s financial troubles.
Speaking in Pretoria, Steenhuisen claimed that Tshwane’s budget had shifted from a surplus of over R200-million a decade ago to a deficit of more than R4-billion.
He highlighted that during Brink’s previous tenure as mayor, the city successfully met its revenue targets for July, August, and September 2024, a performance that has not been consistently maintained since.
Steenhuisen accused the current ANC-led coalition of failing to manage the city’s finances effectively, noting that their only solution to the budget shortfall was to increase taxes on residents already struggling with the rising cost of living.
Point of View spoke to Cilliers Brink about his mayoral candidacy second time around.

Brink stated that his campaign would focus on engaging with Tshwane residents, businesses, and civil society organisations to gather feedback on desired changes within the municipality.
He said his team’s experience in government would be complemented by the insights of the public, which would inform the party’s formal pledges later in the year.
