The highly anticipated Back to the City Hip-Hop Festival is set to return to Newtown, Johannesburg, and will be headlined by renowned American rapper Lupe Fiasco. The announcement has ignited excitement among South African hip-hop fans, who are eagerly awaiting the Chicago-born artist’s rare performance in the country.
Lupe Fiasco, celebrated for his intricate lyricism and socially conscious music, is expected to draw a massive crowd. His catalogue, which includes hits like “Kick, Push,” “Superstar,” and “The Show Goes On,” has influenced a new generation of MCs. This performance is being hailed as a historic moment for the local hip-hop scene.
The festival, widely regarded as one of Africa’s premier hip-hop events, is not solely focused on the headliner. It will be a 12-hour celebration of hip-hop culture, featuring a diverse range of activities. Attendees can look forward to graffiti battles, B-boy showdowns, cyphers, and live performances showcasing the four core elements of hip-hop.
Thousands of fans are expected to gather for the event, which promises to be a day of high energy and community spirit. The festival is scheduled for 11 October 2025, running from 2 PM to 2 AM at its traditional venue in Newtown.
Tickets are currently on sale through Webtickets and Pick n Pay, with organisers noting that they are selling fast.
