A devastating accident on the N2 between Amatigulu and Dokodweni in KwaZulu-Natal claimed the lives of five people in the early hours of Saturday.
The crash occurred when a sugar-carrying truck slammed into a light motor vehicle, pushing it off the road before overturning and crushing the smaller car.
All five occupants of the light vehicle died instantly, and their bodies have since been taken to a mortuary.
The driver of the truck remains unaccounted for. Authorities have yet to confirm whether he is trapped beneath the wreckage or fled the scene.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Human Settlements and Transport has urged the public to avoid the accident site, warning of a major explosion risk due to diesel leaking from the overturned truck.
“We appeal to communities who have camped at the accident scene with buckets and are waiting to loot sugar at the back of the overturned truck to leave the area immediately. The area is hazardous, and a diesel leak from an overturned truck poses an explosion risk.”
MEC Siboniso Duma expressed his condolences to the victims’ families.
“We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. A team of officials from my office and the department is at the scene of the accident, and we are making every effort to locate the families of the victims.”
