The Siz The World team recently discussed South Africa’s growing market for weight-loss medications
The conversation was sparked by Novo Nordisk’s recent launch of Wegovy, a new competitor to the widely used blood sugar management drug Ozempic, which has now become popular for weight loss.
With celebrities and DJs under scrutiny for using Ozempic, the team explored various methods of losing weight, including surgery, exercise, and liposuction, with Sizwe asking: “Does it matter how you lose weight?”
Mpho shared her perspective, saying she wouldn’t care how she lost the weight.
“Personally, I went through the whole gym and eating clean thing. But if I were at a point where I was desperate and needed to lose weight quickly, maybe I would resort to Ozempic to kickstart my metabolism because that’s what some people use it for.”
Sol emphasised that losing weight isn’t just about aesthetics, but also about the internal work.
“I do care. I got to a point where I even had a script for Ozempic and was about to use it off-label for weight loss. But I’ve lost weight before entirely through diet and lifestyle changes, so using a shortcut felt like cheating,” Sol said.
Mbali agreed with Sol, noting that losing weight through healthy eating and going to the gym has become increasingly difficult.
“I have to admit, the older you get, the harder it becomes. I’ve been trying to lose weight this whole year,” she said.
Sizwe said he wouldn’t care how he lost the weight, as he’s never been one to care what people think about him.
