Legendary South African actor Glen Gabela, best known for his role as Pastor Mdletshe on the hit soap opera Uzalo, has made a heartbreaking public appeal for help.
In a viral video that has sent shockwaves through the country, the veteran performer revealed he is battling depression, financial hardship, and the crushing reality of unemployment.
Gabela, whose career has spanned decades in television, theatre, and film, tearfully pleaded for assistance, showing viewers an empty fridge containing only a few bottles of water.
“I just want a decent life, like everyone else. I want to engage with people and help grow the film industry so upcoming performers don’t end up like us,” he said.
The actor told the Sunday World newspaper that he hasn’t had a steady job since being let go from Uzalo in 2018. This prolonged period of unemployment has taken a severe toll on his health.
“I recently had a heart attack and was in hospital for three weeks,” he shared. “Doctors said it was because of stress and depression. I can’t even take care of myself.”
Currently living in Johannesburg, Gabela says he’s been surviving on the kindness of strangers.
“I am really grateful to those who brought me food, it means a lot to me,” he added.
