President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Justice Dunstan Mlambo as the new Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa, effective from today, Friday, 1 August 2025.
The appointment, made in accordance with section 174(3) of the Constitution, follows a comprehensive and transparent process led by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
The President’s office confirmed that the decision was made after considering the views of both the JSC and political parties in the National Assembly.
Prior to this appointment, Justice Mlambo served as the Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court since November 2012.
The position of Deputy Chief Justice became vacant following the elevation of Mandisa Maya to Chief Justice last year, after the retirement of Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.
The President’s office praised the JSC for its “transparent, inclusive and robust process,” which it said strengthened national confidence in the appointment.
President Ramaphosa thanked Justice Mlambo for taking on this “critical national importance” role, expressing his confidence that he will continue to uphold the rule of law and strengthen the judiciary.
