The football world is in mourning following the tragic deaths of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother, André Silva, in a car accident in Spain on Thursday.
The devastating news comes just two weeks after Jota married his wife, Rute Cardoso, leaving behind a young family.
In a remarkable show of support and compassion, Liverpool Football Club has confirmed it will pay out the remainder of Jota’s contract to his family, a sum estimated to be close to $20 million (roughly R350 million).
This generous gesture will provide crucial financial support to his widow and their three children. Jota had two years remaining on his lucrative five-year deal, valued at approximately $9.94 million (roughly R176 million) annually, according to sports contract tracker Spotrac.

The club also released a statement indicating that Jota’s No. 20 jersey would be “rightfully immortalized.”
Jota was a vital part of the Reds’ recent success, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances.
He helped Liverpool secure four major titles, including one FA Cup, two EFL Cups, and, most notably, the 2024–25 Premier League title.
Spanish authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the single-vehicle crash. Early indications suggest that their vehicle lost control due to a blown tire. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
