Hollywood is mourning the loss of Michael Madsen, the veteran actor best known for his intense and often menacing roles in films such as Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill. Madsen passed away on Thursday, 3 July 2025 at the age of 67.
Authorities confirmed that Madsen was found unresponsive at his home in Malibu, California, and was pronounced dead.
His manager, Ron Smith, stated that the apparent cause of death was cardiac arrest, and foul play is not suspected.
Madsen’s career spanned over four decades, boasting more than 300 film and television credits.
While he appeared in a diverse range of projects, from Thelma & Louise to Free Willy and Donnie Brasco it was his frequent collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino that cemented his status as a cult icon.
His most unforgettable performance arguably came as the chillingly sadistic Mr. Blonde in Tarantino’s 1992 breakout hit, Reservoir Dogs. He continued his work with Tarantino, portraying Budd, a retired assassin, in both volumes of Kill Bill and also appeared in The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Beyond Tarantino’s distinct universe, Madsen showcased his range in films like Species, Sin City, and as an NSA director in the James Bond film Die Another Day.
Michael Madsen was reportedly preparing to release a new book of poetry, Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems, and was looking forward to new independent film projects at the time of his passing.
