The Gauteng Provincial Government is set to make a significant payment of R5.4 billion today, 30 June 2025, towards its outstanding e-toll debt.
This follows an initial payment of R3.8 billion last year, marking substantial progress in settling the controversial e-toll burden.
Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile addressed the media on Sunday, providing an update on the province’s commitment to eradicating the e-toll debt, which accumulated after the tolling system was scrapped.
The highly contested e-toll gantries, part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, were finally disconnected in April 2024.
This came after an agreement was reached for the National Treasury to cover 70% of the total debt, leaving the Gauteng province responsible for the remaining 30%.
The total debt attributed to the Gauteng government, including accrued interest, initially stood at R15.9 billion.
MEC Maile confirmed that the first installment, totaling R3.8 billion, was made on September 30, 2024. This payment comprised R3.2 billion for historical debt and R546 million allocated for maintenance.
“Today, we wish to announce that tomorrow, the 30th of June 2025, the Gauteng Provincial Government will honour the province’s obligation by paying the second instalment towards the e-tolls debt as disclosed in the 2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF),” Maile stated.
He further clarified, “The amount due on the 30th of June 2025, based on the Memorandum of Agreement, is R3.377 billion in terms of historical debt. This is the amount that we will be paying to the National Treasury tomorrow as a second instalment as part of our 30 percent contribution.”
