Cape Town City has been relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after a decisive loss to Orbit College, who have now secured their promotion to the Betway Premiership.
In a crucial match, City’s interim coach Diogo Peral reinstated striker Amadou Soukouna to the starting lineup, with Kayden Francis, Emile Witbooi, Shakeel April, and Jody Ah Shene on the bench.
Despite a lively start and enjoying more possession, Cape Town City struggled to create significant scoring opportunities.
Orbit College, content to defend, absorbed the early pressure.
City’s best chance in the first half came after 20 minutes when Prins Tjiueza set up Haashim Domingo, whose shot went directly to Orbit goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane. Orbit managed a few long-range efforts that didn’t trouble veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet.
Orbit broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half.
Gomolemo Khoto created space out wide and delivered a pass to former City striker Letsie Koapeng, who slotted the ball past Keet.
In an attempt to salvage the game, City made a double substitution for the final 30 minutes, bringing on Witbooi and Fortune Makaringe for Tjiueza and Nathan Fasika to bolster their attack.
Orbit College held on for the win, securing their spot in the Premiership and sending Cape Town City down to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Today it hurts. Tomorrow marks the start of a response that’ll define us.
