A listener shared that he and his wife recently welcomed their first child together. Both his mother and mother-in-law came over to their home to help them settle in as new parents.
However, he couldn’t help but notice that his mother has been doing all the chores in the house, while his wife’s mother is being treated like royalty. He notes that his mother is not someone who speaks out, but he can tell that the situation is bothering her.
He is now considering raising the issue with his wife. Reaching out to The Best T in the City with Tbose, Anonymous wants to know if there are any blind spots he might be overlooking.
“My wife and I recently welcomed our first child. Both our mothers came to support us during this time. While it’s been good having them around, I’ve noticed something that’s been bothering me.
“My mother has been up and about: cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, and helping both my wife and my mother-in-law. Meanwhile, my mother-in-law spends most of her time in the bedroom with my wife and her sister, who also visits often since they’re both from Gauteng.
“Now, my mother isn’t someone who speaks up, she’s not the type to complain. but I can see that she’s being treated like house help while the other mom is treated like a guest of honour. It doesn’t sit right with me. If my mother-in-law isn’t doing much, why does she need to sleep over at our place? Surely, she can visit and return home at night.
“I’ve tried to raise this with my wife, but she keeps shutting me down and defending her mother. Would it be wrong of me to ask my wife to tell her mother that she no longer needs to sleep over, or should I just ask both moms to leave for the sake of peace? I just can’t stand seeing my mother doing everything on her own. I know she won’t say anything, so I feel it’s my responsibility to protect her. Or is there a BlindSpot?”
