The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has criticised the provincial MEC of Finance, Lebogang Maile’s revised budget, even after a few adjustments were made.
This comes after Maile retabled the 2025/26 provincial budget on Tuesday.
He increased the budget by R866 million, bringing the total projected revenue to R172 billion from the previously tabled budget of R171.5 billion budget in March.
The DA’s shadow MEC for Finance in the province, Ruhan Robinson said, the added funds will not make any significant difference in Gauteng.
“The R886.6 million added to the Gauteng budget during the re-tabling of the national budget will not make a significant difference in the quality of life and service delivery for the people living in this province,” he said.
MEC Maile made the following adjustments to the provincial budget:
* Office of the Premier—R50 million
* Gauteng Department of Economic Development—R100 million
* Gauteng Department of Human Settlements—R332 million
* Gauteng Department of Roads and Logistics—R314.9 million
* Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Gauteng Department of Environment—R23.8 million and R18 million, respectively
* Gauteng Department of Environment—R50 million
Robinson says it is shocking that no additional funds were allocated to the Provincial Health Department.
“This department is plagued with numerous challenges, ranging from surgeries being cancelled due to budget constraints which are putting patients’ lives in danger. Patients continue to suffer at Gauteng hospitals due to the department’s failure to replace broken equipment such as heating systems and laundry machines,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters in Gauteng said Maile’s priorities aren’t in order.
