Gautrain commuters say they will continue using the service despite the recent price increase, citing its reliability and convenience.
The high-speed express commuter rail system announced its annual fare adjustment on Monday for its pay-as-you-go, weekly, and monthly products.
Commuters will now be required to have at least R38 in their Gautrain card for pay-as-you-go services. The rates will differ for commuters who travel during peak and off-peak times.
The most expensive peak pay-as-you-go tickets are from Hatfield to the OR Tambo International Airport at R258 which increased from R248 the prior year.

Despite these slight price adjustments, Gautrain commuters said they will continue paying for reliability and convenience.
Speaking to Kaya 959 at the Rosebank Gautrain station on Tuesday, here’s what some of them had to say:
“The Gautrain Price increase is not too bad, I still find the Gautrain cheaper than uber and more reliable,” one commuter said.
” I have not actually noticed any difference in terms of the price increase yet, so it hasn’t affected me negatively. if the changes were drastically huge, I would have to reconsidered”.
While others share the same sentiments about convenience, they agreed that the price increase will surely hurt their pockets.
“The increase is surely affecting me, in as much as Gautrain is much convenient especially for long distance travel, but I can feel the pinch in my pocket”.
The institution has also increased its penalty fees. Penalty amounts are determined by the seriousness of the offense.
See the new penalty prices:
Level one penalty- Nonvisible fare evasion – R520.
Level two- Visible fare evasion-R640
Level three – safety and security violations, will now cost R880.
