Controversial Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso, leader of the Jesus Dominion International (JDI) church, has been apprehended in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape.
This development comes just last month after the High Court in Gqeberha acquitted him and his then co-accused, Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sitho, on a string of serious charges.
The Gqeberha High Court, presided over by Judge Irma Schoeman, had previously found Omotoso and his co-accused not guilty on all 32 counts against them.
These charges included grave allegations of rape, sexual assault, and human trafficking. In her ruling, Judge Schoeman stated that the prosecution had not successfully presented evidence that met the stringent legal standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
The circumstances surrounding Omotoso’s latest arrest remain unclear at this time. Authorities have indicated that a formal statement detailing the specific charges leading to this new arrest will be released in due course. This sudden turn of events has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through both his congregation and the wider community, particularly in light of the recent acquittal.
The initial trial had garnered significant public attention due to the serious nature of the accusations and the prominent role of Omotoso as a religious leader. The acquittal last month had been met with mixed reactions, and this subsequent arrest is likely to reignite public debate and scrutiny of the case.
