Nomzamo Park previously made headlines after a tavern shooting that killed 16 people. Now children there are pleading for protection, even marching to their local police station.
Two years after the horrific incident, the area’s children have taken a powerful stand, marching to their local police station last month to demand greater protection and a safer environment.
In a poignant display of their vulnerability and resilience, the young residents voiced their anxieties, their voices echoing the lyrics of a protest song: “What have we done South Africa? What crime have we committed?”
Sinovuyo Mtshikwe, a member of the hub, poignantly articulated the simple yet profound desires of the children, stating,
“The children of this area, as with many others across South Africa, want to play freely, live in safe areas.”
The visuals accompanying this report powerfully illustrate the children’s march and their engagement in the after-school program.
The plea for safety from the young voices of Nomzamo Park underscores the urgent need for sustained efforts to address crime and ensure the well-being of all South Africa’s children.
