Commuters in Gauteng are set to receive a significant boost with the Gautrain announcing the launch of its new “KlevaMova” initiative, designed to make the rapid transit system more affordable and accessible.
The groundbreaking program will offer a substantial 50% discount on train fares to eligible customers and has drastically reduced daily parking fees at Gautrain stations to a mere R1.
Unveiled on Tuesday by Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, KlevaMova aims to alleviate the financial burden of commuting for a wider segment of the population.
The discounted fares will be available to individuals residing in households with a combined annual income of R350,000 or less, students under the age of 25, scholars, pensioners, and recipients of the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) disability grant.
You are eligible to apply for 50% off your train fare if you earn up to R350k annually. Visit https://t.co/XWhgstpZA4 , call 0800 428 87246 (toll-free) or visit our friendly promoters at your nearest Gautrain station. Ts & Cs apply. #GautrainKlevaMova #KlevaMova pic.twitter.com/kJvrRWHcoO

MEC Diale-Tlabela said that the potential of KlevaMova is to improve commuting experiences, reduce stress, and enhance the overall quality of life for diverse income groups
“KlevaMova forms part of government’s efforts to make the Gautrain more accessible to a large share of the population in Gauteng, attract a diverse range of passengers across income groups, and ensure that cost is not a barrier to accessing an efficient, safe, and convenient public transport service.”
“As a result of South Africa’s historical spatial planning, many people live far from work and opportunities and are faced with high transport costs.” This is supported by the Gauteng Household Travel Survey, which revealed that nearly 60% of households spent over 10% of their income on public transport in 2019/20, a rise from 55% in 2014.
“Affordable and accessible public transport is crucial for reducing the cost of living for many South Africans, as it significantly impacts household budgets and access to opportunities,” .
