The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has confirmed the death of a South African citizen following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday, 28 March 2025.
The victim, an English teacher, was among the thousands who lost their lives in the natural disaster.
DIRCO Head of Public Diplomacy, Clayson Monyela, released a statement confirming the sombre news.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of a South African national in the recent earthquake in Myanmar. The individual was working as an English teacher in the region, our thoughts and condolences are with her family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” Monyela said.
The earthquake, which rocked the Southeast Asian nation earlier this week, has resulted in a catastrophic loss of life and widespread destruction.
The official death toll has now surpassed 3000, with rescue and recovery efforts continuing amidst the rubble.
Details regarding the deceased’s identity have been withheld out of respect for the family’s privacy.
DIRCO has stated that they are providing consular assistance to the family and working to facilitate the repatriation of the deceased’s remains.
The South African government has expressed its solidarity with the people of Myanmar and reiterated its commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts.
