A chilling incident has shaken the quiet town of Kuruman this week, as the bodies of a baby girl and two adult men were stolen from a local funeral parlour.
The brazen theft, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, has prompted a widespread police investigation.
Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock, confirmed that a case of business robbery has been opened.
“It is alleged that on March 17th, at approximately 1:30 AM, two men gained access to the guard room of a private funeral home,” Kock said.
According to Lt-Col Kock, the suspects carried out a violent assault on the security guard.
“They assaulted, tied up, and blindfolded the security guard before proceeding to steal three corpses,” he explained.
The motive behind this macabre crime remains unclear, leaving the community reeling and authorities baffled.
The identities of the stolen bodies have not been released. The incident has reportedly left families grieving not only the loss of their loved ones but also the violation of their final resting arrangements.
The police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. “We are urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious around the funeral home during the early hours of Sunday to come forward,” Lt-Col Kock said.
Investigators are considering various theories, including the possibility of ritualistic motives.
“We are treating this case with the utmost seriousness. The theft of human remains is a deeply disturbing crime, and we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice,” said Lt-Col Kock.
