The murder of a 14-year-old girl in Ga-Thoka village, near Mankweng, has sparked outrage and a strong condemnation of domestic and gender-based violence (GBV) from the provincial police commissioner.
The victim was fatally stabbed multiple times on Friday morning while walking to school with a classmate. A 48-year-old man, her stepfather, has been arrested in connection with the heinous crime.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the suspect ambushed the young girl, launching a violent attack with a sharp object.
“The suspect attacked and stabbed her several times with a sharp object and left her helplessly on the road,” Ledwaba said.
Emergency services arrived at the scene, but the girl was pronounced dead. She was still wearing her school uniform when police arrived.
Following the attack, a search operation was launched, leading to the suspect’s arrest in Polokwane.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had a domestic dispute with the deceased’s mother the previous night,” Ledwaba confirmed.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court today, facing a charge of murder.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the provincial police commissioner, has strongly condemned the incident and urged communities to take action against domestic violence.
“We cannot tolerate such acts of violence,” Hadebe said.
“We urge communities to report domestic violence incidents before they escalate to tragic levels. Speak up, seek help, and break the cycle of violence,” she added.
