Pope Francis, who is gradually recovering from double pneumonia, shared a heartfelt message with his followers on Sunday, acknowledging his frailty and describing his illness as a “period of trial”.
Speaking from Rome’s Gemelli hospital, the 88-year-old pope expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he has received, stating, “our bodies are weak,” as he reflected on his ongoing health struggles.
As the pope continues his convalescence, the Vatican has announced that the traditional Sunday Angelus prayer will again be issued as a written text for the fifth consecutive week.
The pope’s hospitalisation, now in its fourth week, has been marked by a series of health challenges, including respiratory complications, mild kidney issues, and a severe coughing fit.
“I am sharing these thoughts with you while I am facing a period of trial, and I join with so many brothers and sisters who are sick: fragile, at this time, like me. Our bodies are weak but, even like this, nothing can prevent us from loving, praying, giving ourselves, being for each other, in faith, shining signs of hope,” Pope Francis wrote in an Angelus message published by the Vatican.
However, recent updates from his medical team suggest gradual improvement. On Saturday, doctors at Gemelli hospital reported efforts to reduce the pope’s reliance on a non-invasive ventilation mask during nighttime, allowing his lungs to regain strength naturally.
As Pope Francis continues his recovery, the global Catholic community remains united in prayer, hoping for his swift return to health and public ministry.
