Bahumi Mhlongo, daughter of media personality Somizi Mhlongo, recently shared a personal and heartfelt reflection on her journey with lymphoedema, a condition she was diagnosed with over a decade ago.
In a candid social media post, Bahumi opened up about the physical and emotional challenges she faces.
“To the posts I resist to post, but will if they’ll help even one person. Here’s a foot post for all you who hate feet,” Bahumi began, addressing the discomfort and pain she endures daily.
She revealed that the pain in her leg had become particularly severe, leading her to reflect on her journey and share her thoughts with her followers.
Bahumi spoke openly about the emotional toll of living with lymphoedema.
“I kept quiet about it. There’s a trauma response I’ve had trouble breaking with regards to my leg (amongst other things), and it’s this: pretending to be fine when I most certainly was not,” she wrote.
She explained how growing up, her pain was often minimised, leading her to develop a ‘toxic yet often celebrated coping mechanism’ of neglecting her body’s cries for help.
Bahumi urged others to prioritise their health, emphasising that seeking help is not a sign of weakness.
“If God brings to attention your health—emotionally, mentally, and physically—you shouldn’t feel bad or responsible for addressing your wellbeing. Take heed. Seek help.”
In the midst of her struggles, Bahumi emphasised the importance of gratitude. She encouraged her followers to appreciate the blessings in their lives, no matter how small.
“Be grateful for the rain, for the shelter, for the legs, for the sight, for the rest, for life… we all have things we’re struggling with, they ought to draw us to humility if you ask me, but just be grateful for what you have, and allow God’s grace for what you don’t. It’s all by the grace of God anyways.”
